About Dorene Sykes
Dorene Sykes is recognized as a premier photographic artist on Cape Cod. Her artwork explores the harmonious relationship between people and their environment. See her Artist's Statement.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, Dorene studied at Germain School of Photography and Hunter College in New York where she earned a degree in economics. Photography took a back seat while her career progressed from budget analysis at the United Nations to customer support and marketing management at technology firms in greater Boston. After earning an MBA degree at Boston University, she ran a services marketing consulting business.
In 2004, Dorene settled in Falmouth, Massachusetts on Cape Cod and returned to her earlier dream of a career in photography. After a few years freelancing as a photographer with the Enterprise newspaper, she ran a successful family portraiture business for a decade. During this time she earned Certified Professional Photographer credentials from the Professional Photographers of America and recognition as a Master Artist from the Cape Cod Art Center. She also taught photography for eight years at Cape Conservatory.
While retired from portraiture, she continues to cover performing arts events and create photographic art, many of which have won awards. She also judges competitions at camera clubs across the state of Massachusetts. Her interests include performing with the Boston area New World Chorale and the Woods Hole Recorder Consort, researching family history, and being a devoted slave to her black cat Mindy.
