About Dorene Sykes

Dorene Sykes is recognized as a premier photographic artist on Cape Cod. Her artwork explores the harmonious relationship between people and their environment. See her Artist's Statement.

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Dorene studied at Germain School of Photography and also Hunter College in New York City where she earned a BA degree in economics. Photography took a back seat while her career progressed from budget analysis at the United Nations to customer support and marketing management at technology firms in greater Boston. After earning an MBA degree at Boston University, she ran a services marketing consulting business.

In 2004, Dorene settled on Cape Cod and returned to her earlier dream of a career in photography. She first freelanced as a photographer for the Enterprise newspaper. Then she ran a successful portraiture business for a decade, specializing in beach portraits of extended families. During this time she earned Certified Professional Photographer credentials from the Professional Photographers of America. Dorene also taught photography classes for eight years at Cape Conservatory and coached students privately.

In 2014, Dorene gained recognition as a Master Artist at the Cape Cod Art Center, one of fewer than 50 artists across the Cape to have achieved this distinction. While retired from portraiture, she continues to create photographic art and cover performing arts events. She also judges competitions at camera clubs across Massachusetts, and was honored to judge the Spring 2021 Inter-Club Competition sponsored by The New England Camera Club Council (NECCC) with over fifty member clubs across six states.
