About Dorene Sykes

Dorene Sykes is recognized as a premier photographic artist on Cape Cod. Her artwork often explores the harmonious relationship between people and their environment. See her Artist's Statement.

A native of Michigan, Dorene studied at Germain School of Photography and Hunter College in New York City where she earned a degree in economics. Photography took a back seat while her career progressed from budget analysis at the United Nations to customer support and marketing management at technology firms in greater Boston. After earning an MBA degree at Boston University, she ran a services marketing consulting business.

In 2004, Dorene settled on Cape Cod, Massachusetts and returned to her earlier dream of a career in photography. After freelancing as a photographer with the Enterprise newspaper, she ran a successful portraiture business for a decade. During this time she earned Certified Professional Photographer credentials from the Professional Photographers of America. Dorene also gained recognition as a Master Artist by the Cape Cod Art Center, one of a handful of photographers across the Cape to achieve this distinction. She taught photography for eight years at Cape Conservatory.

Now retired from portraiture, Dorene continues to cover performing arts events and create photographic works of art, many of which have won awards. She also judges camera club competitions statewide.

Dorene's current volunteer commitments include: Belonging to Each Other, Neighborhood Falmouth, Solstice Singers, and Woods Hole Historical Museum (Board co-chair). A lifelong choral singer, she has sung with leading choruses in New York City and Boston and currently performs with the Woods Hole Recorder Consort.
